TiVo
It was the summer of 2000, our daughter was about 6 months old, and we were hanging out with some geek-oriented friends who finally hipped us to what TiVo was about. We were talking about missing some show one night, and lamenting to our friends about how watching an 8pm show was a luxury not afforded to those with infants when our friends said, matter-of-factly, “We don’t worry about it. We have TiVo.” Of course, I knew all about TiVo, but hadn’t realized until then what it could do for us. The tone of my friend’s voice was all that was needed to convey it… it was as though he no longer understood why we were talking about watching TV at a certain time, and my wife and I grokked it immediately. That afternoon we bought our first TiVo, and haven’t gone back since.
