Where Do Apple Pay Evangelists Shop?

I’ve heard a lot of comments lately saying something along the lines of, “Coin, Plastc and Wocket are too late! Apple Pay is the way of the future!” To anyone who shares this sentiment I ask a simple question: Where do you shop?

I have yet to be able to buy gasoline with Apple Pay nor have I been able to use it in a restaurant. Heck, even where it’s accepted I’ve been denied its use by one cashier where another happily took it.

I love Apple Pay. It’s super-convenient, secure and, yes, even fun. But it’s not ubiquitous. And until it is, there will continue to be a need to carry traditional credit cards … or some other device of a similar form factor.

I think Coin, Plastc, Wocket and their ilk have at least a good 5 years before we consumers will be ready to drop the wallet altogether. Probably longer.

Here in the Midwest (states like Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, etc.), there is a "big box retailer" like Super Wal-Mart, Super Target and the like called "Meijer." Meijer inside their retail stores (where I buy our family’s groceries every week) takes Apple Pay. Their Verifone machines still require a PIN if you use Apple Pay as a debit transaction, but it’s great to have Apple Pay there.

Many Meijer stores have gas stations–and they take Apple Pay at the pump. I paid at a Meijer Gas Station just yesterday with my Apple Watch. Works great! I hope in the year to come more gas stations will see the light & begin accepting Apple Pay at the pump. It’s so convenient–especially in a cold Midwest winter–to not have to take your iPhone outside or dig thru layers of clothing to get to a wallet to pay for gas. Just an Apple Watch scan does the job!

McDonalds and CVS – and thats about it down here in SW Florida for where I shop! Plus ApplePay does not have merchant agreements with all of my card issuers yet so thats another problem. I agree though…5 years!
