Hi, Dave!

You mentioned that you don't backup photos and music to your idisk which is due to size I suppose, right?
I tried to sync my 3 GB iphoto library through iDisk between multiple machines and recognized that the whole library file is synched each time a change is made. Any suggestions on effective iphoto library synching?

Another question? I lost synching yojimbo through leopard upgrade. How do you manage to keep that working?

best wishes

Duan talked of 4 GB of mail.

My answer to archiving mail is to use MailSteward.com.

Not free, but minor fee.

Allows SQL searching of the contents & is far better than anything else I've tried.

Had to combine over 10 years of mail to do forensic searches. Worked like a charm.

Hi Dave,

I was listening to mgg #169, and was alarmed to hear that cd-r's and dvd-r's potentially last only 5 years or so! I keep a lot of critical data on burned disks, always at least three copies, but only on the disks! I'm assuming you would also recommend storing these files on hard disk. Do you have any other advice on long term storage of big files? I probably have 200 gigs of archived files that are mission critical!
     Great show!!!!!!

Hi Dave,
I have been using the same sync/backup strategy you are using on several Tiger macs, but I just got a new iMac at work -Leopard -and the iDisk is called something diffrent than "iDisk". It is called my mac (me) name. This causes a problem in one database program that requires access to some file sin the iDisk to work properly. The problem is that the program in Leopard cannot find the files in my "renamed" iDisk.

I wonder if you have any suggestions for this. FYI, the path for this set of file sis stored inside the iDisk, so i cannot change the path on the file, because if I make the Leopard version to work, the Tiger machines will not find it (!)

Thanks,

David

Kevin: you've got the right solution. If something is mission critical, backing it up is the only true way to (mostly) ensure that you'll always have a good copy of that file.

Hi Dave,

Great article, I've been doing a lot of thinking lately about my own backups, and in specific syncing. In regards to syncing, how do you protect against a corrupted file syncing back over a good mission critical file! I work in audio and will always burn a disk of a session, before syncing it to other Macs just in case! Love the show, I never miss it! Thanks, Kevin Smith
