I had the pleasure yesterday of recording Mac Roundtable Episode #46 with Don McAllister, Bart Busschots, Chuck Joiner, and Joseph Nilo. I also had the pleasure of sleeping while Don painstakingly edited the podcast together from multiple audio sources and made it sound as though we were all the same room. Topics include MobileMe/cloud computing, the upcoming New Media Expo, Mac gaming, and some very cool Mac software picks.

The results of our chat — and Don’s superb editing — can be heard and downloaded over at the Mac Roundtable site.

Yesterday, the final versions of the Advertisement Unit Standards and Download Measurement Guidelines were published by the Association for Downloadable Media. I was directly involved in the creation and announcement of the former, and am quite pleased by the way these turned out. These were designed very much with an “open arms” approach, and are specifically inclusive (and not exclusive) of everything being done today. Having all these standards in one “go-to” place was the goal, and we achieved that with resounding success. If you haven’t already, go check them out!

Monday night I fly out to San Francisco for some meetings and also to attend ad:tech. This ad:tech is a bit different in that we (the Association for Downloadable Media) are presenting our proposed ad standards as well as guidelines for audience measurement.

And, as it turns out, the former will be introduced by yours truly. I have spent the past few months working with the other members of the Ad Standards Committee crafting these, and it will be my honor and pleasure to introduce them for public comment.

So if you’ll be in town, come on down to ad:tech on Wednesday morning to hear about these two fantastic new developments. If you’re not, they’ll be publicly available for your review after the event. Either way, please take the time to digest what’s been created, and offer any comments you may have. We look forward to hearing what you think.

Last night I had the pleasure of joining Tim Robertson, Guy Serle, and David Cohen for a segment on MyMac Podcast #177. Truly was a blast.

I also neglected to mention that I did the Mac OS Ken Day 6 podcast with Ken Ray a few weeks back, and it, too, was an enjoyable experience. You’ll have to subscribe to Day 6 to hear that, but it’s OK. Ken’s a great guy, and produces even greater content. It’s totally worth the money.

Makes me think we need to figure out how to incorporate guests into the Mac Geek Gab podcast. And more product reviews. All while keeping your questions and comments answered. Maybe we just need to do two shows a week!

The fact that the ADM held its first "in person" meetings here was simultaneously no surprise as well as icing on the cake.We at The Mac Observer and iPodObserver have been media sponsors of the Podcast/Portable/New Media show since its inception, and (unofficially) I'm very much looking forward to doing that again.... That means I won't have to spend another gorgeous fall weekend in Ontario, California, and I also think Las Vegas brings many benefits, the biggest of them being that it's easier to get to and also adds the credibility of having this show in a "real" trade show town.Kudos to Tim Bourquin and his entire team for a job well done.

This year’s P(N)ME officially ended today (Sunday, that is) and it was the best one yet. Sure, it didn’t have the “what are we all doing together?” vibe the first show had, nor was it the “what are we going to do together?” vibe that last year’s show had. This year’s show really had a clear direction to it — let’s legitimize this thing and partner up as much as possible to make some money — and for me that was just about perfect. The fact that the ADM held its first “in person” meetings here was simultaneously no surprise as well as icing on the cake.

We at The Mac Observer and iPodObserver have been media sponsors of the Podcast/Portable/New Media show since its inception, and (unofficially) I’m very much looking forward to doing that again. This is a show worth supporting, worth talking about, and worth building.

Next year it’s a month earlier and in Las Vegas. That means I won’t have to spend another gorgeous fall weekend in Ontario, California, and I also think Las Vegas brings many benefits, the biggest of them being that it’s easier to get to and also adds the credibility of having this show in a “real” trade show town.

Kudos to Tim Bourquin and his entire team for a job well done.

Garrick Van Buren had an interesting post yesterday about a sponsorship he remembered from a 17-month-old episode of Evil Genius Chronicles, a podcast that we represent.Though Garrick's words say that podcast advertising doesn't work, his very post proves the opposite.... If it were within the last 6 months, I can bet you he would have remembered that it was iPodJuice who sponsored the show. The best part is because he blogged about it, Dave Slusher (the host) responded, and now the sponsor is getting even more traction from an ad that was written off on *last* year's taxes.

Garrick Van Buren had an interesting post yesterday about a sponsorship he remembered from a 17-month-old episode of Evil Genius Chronicles, a podcast that we represent.

Though Garrick’s words say that podcast advertising doesn’t work, his very post proves the opposite. After all, how many other mediums can claim an 18-month retention on *anything*? Sure, Garrick forgot the name of the sponsor, but he remembered what they did and what show he heard it on. After nearly 18 months, that’s HUGE, if you ask me. If it were within the last 6 months, I can bet you he would have remembered that it was iPodJuice who sponsored the show.

The best part is because he blogged about it, Dave Slusher (the host) responded, and now the sponsor is getting even more traction from an ad that was written off on *last* year’s taxes.

In this case, the only potential mistake was that iPodJuice stopped sponsoring the show. For every Garrick Van Buren that *nearly* remembered everything and blogged to get the rest, there are likely 100 other listeners who moved on to something else. If iPodJuice were a regular sponsor here, I bet their bottom line would show it.

I spent the day in conference calls. That’s not exactly rare for me, but today was special in that every call was extremely valuable. I’ll post more about the results of the others when we’re ready in a few days, but today I can talk about the Association for Downloadable Media, which had it’s first “member” conference call today.

The ADM’s mission is to bring together the podcast/portable media community, help define some best practices, and make it easier and more comfortable for advertisers to sponsor the content. In a nutshell: helping podcasters make money. With that, BackBeat Media is happy to be a corporate member of the ADM, and you can expect us to take an active role in furthering the cause here. Like the IAB has done for the web, the ADM intends to really help to educate the market about how best to use this medium. There are some fantastic people involved already, and more getting involved every day.

If you have *any* interest in this at all, I encourage you to sign up. Individual podcasters can do so for $150 yearly, and corporations for $1000. Cheap price to help define the direction of this fantastic medium, if you ask me.

I just wanted to take a quick minute this morning and let you all know about two publications we recently brought into the family here at BackBeat Media.

iPhoneAlley.com is a site created and published by Michael Johnston, focusing directly on Apple’s latest gadget and its impact in the market. Already iPhoneAlley has posted some great scoops, including an AT&T customer manual, a live WWDC keynote stream, and a live unboxing of the iPhone on the day it was released. Michael has long been helping us by converting our Mac Geek Gab podcast into Apple’s enhanced AAC format, and we’re looking forward to the sharing the fruits of this extension to our relationship.

Published by Adam Christianson, The MacCast is one of the very top — and one of the first — Mac-focused podcasts. Adam’s loyal listener base has already proven to be a very successful market for us, due largely to Adam’s personable and detailed approach to his show. We’re proud to have partnered with him in this venture, and envision a long and successful road together.

If you haven’t had the chance to check out both of these publications yet, do yourself a favor and give them a visit. I promise you won’t be disappointed.
