My Lightning Lessons

Just posted an article about my lightning experiences and lessons learned over at TMO that *should* have gone live a year ago, but got lost in the system. Thankfully a conversation sparked up this weekend on the Macworld Forums about Chris Breen’s related power experiences, and it sent me to seek out this old article that for whatever reason was never published at TMO.

Skype for iPhone thoughts

Skype for the iPhone came out last night, and I spent a little time with it, and wrote a lot about it. Don’t worry, I’ve been using Skype regularly for years, so most of what I wrote is actually real stuff I didn’t make up!

I Want a Trial!

At the risk of sounding even more egotistical than I have been recently (difficult, I know… but I’m going to try!), I’ll quote myself from an article we published over on iPodObserver regarding the iPhone App Store today:

I would love to be able to download an app and have a 24-hour trial period. If I like it, I’ll buy it. If I don’t, it magically disappears from my device, never to return unless I fork over the cashola.

No Sirius iPod Coming Soon

Every few years, the rumor mill perks up with talk, speculation, or simply hope that Apple and Sirius will team up and put Sirius content on the iPod.

It ain’t gonna happen folks. At least not any time soon. And the reason is simple: Apple makes money selling music on the iTunes store. Until Apple has a subscription model of their own to use, they certainly aren’t going to cut into their a la carte business by using someone *else’s* subscription model.

At least that’s my take on it. Tell me I’m wrong. I dare ya.

Mobile blogging

For years I’ve complained that the only time I think to blog something is when I’m away from my computer and, hence, nothing gets blogged. My blog frequency certainly supports that. Now that WordPress for the iPhone is out, perhaps that will change and you’ll hear more from me here, as well. Time will tell.

Winter Migration (of the Computing kind)

As many listeners of our Mac Geek Gab podcast know, I recently purchased a new 2.6GHz 15″ MacBook Pro from Apple. It arrived yesterday, but I really didn’t get a chance to even begin setting it up until today. Honestly, if I wasn’t traveling to Austin, Texas next week, I probably would have waited longer — things have just been too busy around here to be distracted with a computer migration.

And while in the past I’d used Apple’s fantastic Migration Assistant to clone my old system onto my new one, this time I decided I’d better start from scratch. After all, the system that exists on my previous MacBook Pro had been Migrated and Upgraded since about Mac OS 10.2. That’s all the way back to a time when I was living in another state, running on a different CPU architecture, and was a significantly younger man. It’s possible I even had less children then, too. Suffice to say, it was time (time, perhaps, that I don’t have this week!).

So I manually migrated my documents and data over, and have been reinstalling apps one-by-one. Thus far, it’s actually gone MUCH smoother than I expected, and I’m now up and running “full-time” on the new box. There are still a few things I need to get in place, and I’m sure I’ll realize most of those while I’m traveling next week, but that’s the fun, isn’t it?

Everyone who bought an on day 1 *knows* that it’s going to be cheaper at some point down the road. But that’s not why you buy on day 1, is it?
